12 Jan - Rotary Conference for Development ’87 (Overprint on the 23 February, 1980 75th Anniversary of Rotary International set)

• This set of two overprinted stamps os found with every possible combination of the overprints on them. See the page Fake and Questionable Items, listed in the Table of Contents, for a complete listing of the known varieties.

• A shift in the black of the original stamp.

• The privately produced booklet of Rotary stamps created by the Salam Stamp Company of Dhaka.

• The 1 taka surcharge and overprint for the Rotary Conference for Development, issued on January 12, 1987. One overprint is inverted and partially on the stamp on the right side and part of another overprint on the left side. Also, there is no black square obliteration over the original 40p value, as in the issued stamp. This is one of many varieties of the overprint that has made it on to the philatelic market. Additional: 87-1e and 87-2c are constant varieties found once in each sheet.
There was a program at the Sonargaon Hotel on the date of issue issue. A limited number of FDCs were issued with the special Sonargaon Hotel cancelation for those invited to the event.
A privately produced booklet of stamps was prepared by the Salam Stamp Centre. Each booklet contains six stamps - three stamps of each value. The cover is light blue and the front reads "ROTARY INTERNATIONAL/CONFERENCE FOR DEVELOPMENT/IN BANGLADESH. 12-14 january, 1987"

• The top is a partial image of the rare Camp P.O. for the Rotary issue. At the bottom is a First Day Cover missing the red printing. Envelopes with cachets prepared by the Post Office exist for many, if not most, FDCs with errors in printing or folding.

• The proof sheet of the Tk.1 overprint for the low value of the overprinted Rotary set.

• Rare presentation folder that includes an insert, a pair of the stamps, and a First Day Cover. These folders were produced in very low numbers and were not sold to the public, therefore many were ignored by collectors.

In 1987 the law was changed making it mandatory that the postal cancellors be changed from the English language to Bangla. For a period of time you will now find plain circular FDC cancellors in the new language. Like everything, there was no consistancy in using the circular/commemorative cancellors.

Additional: The FDC and the stamps have absolutely no dates nor information on them, other than the stamps having the mode of transportation printed in Bengali and English. The cover is very attractive but only states that it is a First Day Cover and has TRANSPORT in Bengali and English. A person who does not read Bengali would have no idea when the cover was released.
